Brickwork

Bricking work has begun. We had to have our bricks made to order at Littlehampton to match the existing brickwork. Our old bricks are not in the standard size of modern bricks so the only way to match the existing bricks was to get the hand-made Old Red Bricks from Littlehampton. Our brickies are two older Italian guys, Frank and Pat. They started work today.

They started work by laying the stepped stretcher plint profle brickcourse around the perimeter of the new extension. The bright colour of our new bricks will hopefully in time age and blend in with the existing brickwork of the old part of the house.

One of the brickies, Frank, kindly helped us to remove part of the brickwork in our existing fireplace in the kitchen, which will house our new rangehood, and rebricked the area to fit the size of the rangehood.

The electrician also came by to redo the horrific wiring work previously done in the kitchen. At least all the wire run parallel to each other in an orderly fashion now. Being obsessive compulsive, I couldn't resists measuring the distance between each wire, and map the measurements out on a photo I took of the layout. Just in case we ever need to screw something into that wall.
However, there are more important things that are occupying my attention at the moment - the tiles for the splashback. I managed to find some handmade subway tiles for the rest of our splasback. I think they will go well to accent the terracotta tiles which we plan to only place above the cooktop. There is the fine balance between having an accent feature and a feature that is too garish and in your face, I think.
