The big day has arrived!!!!!! We were up bright and early this morning and on site by 7.30am. We had mild concerns about the weather. The weather forecast was not looking great with showers expected later in the day. But it was a freezing cold morning and we were bundles of nervous energy. Hubby was thrilled to be on traffic duty.

The concrete truck arrived just past 8.15am. There was no room for the truck to park so it took up one lane of traffic space. Because it was early on a Saturday morning, there were very few cars around but I got really worried for later as it can get busy. I wondered how long it would take to fill our backyard with concrete.
We videotaped quite a bit with the entire concrete pour so I thought it would be interesting to post it. I was surprised at how messy the entire process was. And then there was the waiting, when the truck finished emptying its load and had to go pick up more concrete from the supplier.
Here's a video of the concrete being filled for the family bathroom.
And this one for the main slab for the new extension.
It was a very long and messy process. And the concrete truck was blocking up one lane of traffic on the street. We went off to have some breakfast to leave the concreters to do their work, as we were in the way. They were a very cheerful bunch, even in the face of a gloomy sky with the threat of rain. One of the guys even asked hubby if he wanted to have a go at holding the hose while they videotaped him.
Returning from breakfast, we discovered that the council inspector had been around. Turns out our builder did not apply for a traffic management permit. As the concrete truck was blocking one lane of traffic on the main road, this was a huge problem. Traffic was banked up and the council inspector was not happy. We decided we didn't want to hang around to face the council inspector's wrath. Our contract states that it is the builder's responsibility to organize any traffic management permit requirements. We wondered why he didn't apply for a permit as the cost for the permit was our cost, not his.
By the time we got back just after noon, the slab had been poured. All the work that was remaining was to finish the concrete surface. Turns out the council inspector did return and he was definitely not pleased the truck was still there. Looks like the builder will be getting a fine from the council.
Little droplets of rain started to fall from the darkened sky but we sighed a huge sigh or relief. Our concrete slab had been poured and we no longer have to worry about the rain. Any rain over the next few days will in fact help with the curing process by cooling the slab down.
